Why Live in the White Mountains …

In the dark skies on top of the Mogollon Rim are the twin communities of Heber-Overgaard. At 6,500 feet, the air is a little thinner and a whole lot cooler than the desert below.

The Mogollon Rim was originally inhabited by the Mogollon and Apache Indian tribes. The First White settlers appeared sometime in the late 1800’s. The community of Heber was begun and many of the original family lines still exist.

Sometime in the late 1930’s, a long Danish immigrant, Chris Overgaard, had heard about the stand of virgin Ponderosa Pines and knew there was a living to be made. He set up a saw mill and stared a second community which was eventually named after him.

It wasn't long before shops and businesses began popping up. Travel up the mountain for summer retreats added a new element to the logging towns that has existed as a way of life for one hundred years. Elk, deer, antelope, bear and javelina were abundant and hunters came to get their fill. The early summer visitors came with their tents and fishing poles. Today, there is a steady stream of summer visitors coming up from the valley and in from other states, just to bask in the wonder of the Mogollon Rim area.
